Participants & Liturgical Objects Used in Mass Board Game

This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on all activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

Participants & Liturgical Objects Used in Mass Board Game is based on the game Patolli which is an ancient Aztec board game that takes its name from the Aztec word for bean - patolli, meaning fava or kidney bean. The game is played on a curious diagonal cross-shaped board with 6 markers and 5 beans (or sometimes four beans) as dice (these were painted with a white dot on one side). It was played all over MesoAmerica: the Teotihuacanos (the builders of Teotihuacan, ca. 200 B.C. - 650 A.D.) played it as well as the Toltecs (ca. 750 - 1000 A.D.), the inhabitants of Chizen Itza (founded by refugee Toltec nobles, ca. 1100 - 1300 A.D.), the Aztecs (who claimed Toltec descent, 1168 - 1521 A.D.), and all of the people they conquered (practically all of MesoAmerica, including the Zaptotecs and the Mixtecs). The ancient Mayans also played a version of Patolli. Patolli was very much a game of commoners and nobles alike and it was reported by the conquistadors that Montezuma often enjoyed watching his nobles play the game at court (from wikipedia.org).

Need:

5 lima beans with one dot painted on one side (or you can substitute 5 coins, 5 pieces of craft foam, etc.)
6 pawns, beans, etc. for each player
Game Cards
Game Board

Set Up:

This game can be played individually or in teams. Shuffle the deck and place it face down in a small basket near the game board. Put an empty basket nearby for the discards. Give each player 6 pawns of the same color. Players put their pawns in their colored oval. The players throw the “dice” to decide who starts the game. The player with the highest throw starts.

Rules:

The opponents make their moves by turns. To make a possible move you must answer a question (the player to your left draws a card and reads you the question) about participants and liturgical objects used in Mass. If you are correct you then roll the “dice”. If you do not answer the question correctly, your turn is over.

You start with 6 playing pieces in your colored oval. You must roll a 1 to enter a piece onto the board (you would have to have only one bean with the white mark face up and all the other beans face down which is a score of one). Players enter on the square of their color in the center of the board. Your pieces exit by rolling the exact amount needed to land on your colored square on the leg of the board (right below your starting square). The game ends after the first person gets all 6 of their pieces off the board.

Players move their pieces clockwise. When you roll you must move a piece at all possible.

5 spots you move 10 spaces
4 spots = 4 spaces
3 spots = 3 spaces
2 spots = 2 spaces
1 spot = 1 space
0 spots = no move

If you land on the purple spot at the end of the arms you must roll again, but it is your choice as to which piece you move. You cannot move to another spot that is occupied UNLESS it is one of the 8 color spots near the center of the board. In that case, the piece you land on, even if it’s your own is removed and put back in their starting oval. When you get one piece off the board, all players must give you one of their game pieces. If you roll a zero you put one of your game pieces in a pot that goes to the person who gets all their pieces off the board first. If you land on a brown triangle space (there are 8 on the board), you give each player one of your game pieces. Keep as many pieces on the board as possible to keep your options open. Landing on too many triangles can cause you to lose even if you are the first off the board.

*The ultimate objective is to move all of your game pieces off of the board before your opponent does and to have the largest number of game pieces remaining in your possession.

Game Pieces- Playing pieces can be coins, colored buttons, game pieces from other games, fish rocks for the bottom of aquariums, craft foam cut into shapes, glass rocks for vases, etc. You can paint small objects such as rocks, small plastic tops or caps, etc. You can also buy pawns at game stores.

Liar, liar pants on fire! (file folder game)

8th Commandment: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (Catholic version of the Ten Commandments.)

Liar, liar pants on fire!

Here is a fun game that helps children to recognize what lying is and how to resist it.

Introduction to game- To bear false witness means to not tell the whole truth. It is lying, but it is much more than lying. We lie to either make ourselves look good (and this is called pride) or sometimes to make others look bad. Sometimes we lie to get out of trouble. Sometimes it’s so easy to lie that we didn’t even realize we lied! The truth is very important because we need to be able to trust each other and understand each other. We need to guard what we say, and say what we mean by speaking the truth.

Do you guard what you say?
Do you lie?
Do you gossip? (Talk about others when they are not around?)
Do you boast and make yourself look better than you are?
Do you try to get others in trouble?
Do you point out other people’s faults unnecessarily?
Do you not tell the whole truth?
Do you say things about people that you wouldn’t want them to know about?

Directions: Put the Game Cards in two small basket and set near the game board. Set an egg timer for a specified time (optional). Place your markers on START. Roll the die and move that many spaces. Follow the directions on the space you land on. If you land on a “Pants On Fire” space, you pick up a corresponding card (light blue card) and read it out loud. On the card is a situation that you must make a choice on how you should answer. Remember that God doesn’t want us to lie or to be deceitful and hopefully you will make the right decision. Answer the question to the best of your ability (the teacher can coach the student if necessary). If you land and on a space with a picture of a person with a long nose, the player to your right picks up a corresponding card (light green card) and reads it out loud. You must answer the question with a “Yes” regardless if it is true or not. The player who read the question must identify whether you told the truth or a lie. If they catch you in a lie, they receive a token.

*As you play the game, take advantage of natural opportunities to highlight behaviors that facilitate or impeded being truthful and being honest. Discuss with the students why someone would be truthful and honest. You could also ask, “What do you think of Kelly’s answer?” or “What else could you say or do?” or “What is the worse thing someone could say or do in this situation?” When appropriate, reinforce a variety of ways to say or do things appropriately.

Continue game as time permits or until the egg timer goes off. The player with the most tokens wins.

Additional Rules: (For older children.) When you land on a space with a picture of a person with a long nose, the player to your right picks up a corresponding card (light green card) and reads it out loud. You must answer the question with a “Yes” regardless if it is true or not. The player who read the card can then ask that person as many questions as he likes in order to help him decide whether the truth is being told or not. Obviously, sometimes they will be telling the truth. Listen carefully how people fabricate stories in an attempt to avoid questions. When the player feels he has heard enough he says “No further questions” and states if you told the truth or a lie.

Journey Through The Bible Game

Each player rolls the die and moves the number of spaces indicated. If the player lands on a picture, they must identify the Bible story it depicts. If the player is correct, they stay where they are. If they are not correct, they go back to where they were. Players proceed down the winding path and the first player to reach FINISH wins. The 2nd and 3rd place winners follow respectively.

For small children, adults may identify the Bible story when the child lands on it. After a while, teachers can call for volunteers to identify the Bible story. This will encourage children to learn the names of the Bible stories. By hearing the names of the Bible stories as they play each time, they will soon be able to identify them.

This board game can be used in numerous ways to teach children:

1) to identify the Bible stories by a picture
2) name a fact about the Bible story
3) answer a question about the Bible story (review previous lessons)
4) spell a character or object from the Bible story

I Love God Above All Things (Catholic) card game

This game is free, however it is only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. All graphics/images/clipart etc. used on all activities are not my own and are from various internet sources.

I Love God Above All Things: is played with a deck of cards with pictures of various objects on them. The purpose of this game is see if you can "lose" all of your objects (cards) that you have valued over God.

4 pages of different cards

Introduction: We are to love God above all things. We cannot value money, power, TV, music, video games, homework, friends or other things before our relationship with God. Can you put God first in your life?

Directions: Four cards are dealt to each player if three to six players are involved. With only two players, five cards are dealt to each. All remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile. Randomly choose a player to go first. On your turn, ask for a specific card. You must already hold one of these cards. For example: "Charlie, please give me the cell phone." If Charlie has it, he gives it to you and you go again. Otherwise, he says "Go Fish" and you draw from the draw pile. If you happen to draw the card you asked for, you get another turn. If you draw anything else, it is now the next player's turn. When you collect both cards, immediately show the set to the other players and place the cards face up in front of you. When the draw pile runs out, keep playing until all of the cards have been made into sets of two. When the draw pile is exhausted, no one says "Go Fish." If you ask someone for a card she doesn't have, it becomes her turn. The first player who runs out of cards says, “I love God above all things” and is declared the winner.

Honor Your Father & Mother File Folder Game: God says to “Honor your father and mother”. Honoring your father and mother means respecting and obeying them because they are very important people. Place your markers on the "START” space. The players roll a die and follow the directions on the space they land on. When a player lands on the picture of the family, they must state a reason why their parents are important. Example: “I honor my parents because they take care of me.” The first player to “FINISH” wins. (4th Commandment- Catholic)

Homeworkopoly

teachnet.com- Homeworkopoly (it takes a bit for it to download so please give it some time)
Here is a fun game to encourage students to do their homework.

*I share my classroom and I cannot leave anything on the bulletin board so everything that I use for my class has to be portable. This is my version of Homeworkopoly (game from above link) that some of you might find useful.

Homeworkopoly: The objective of the game is to learn the responsibility of doing your homework and turning it on time.

Younger Students:

GETTING STARTED

1. When a student brings in any homework, have them go over to the board, roll the dice and move. Each student will do this when their homework is handed in if they have done the assigned homework.

2. The students will continue to do this throughout the year. It never has to end.

3. Deal with special spaces as the students land on them.

4. Having a rotating "Game Show Host" to keep check on the board as students move will make your job easier.

SPECIAL PLACES

Community Chest- When you land on these spaces, take the top card from the deck indicated, follow the instructions and return the card face down to the bottom of the deck. The "Get Out of Time Out Free" card is held until used and then returned to the bottom of the deck. If the player who draws it does not wish to use it, then they may keep it (attach it to the back of the game board with a magnet), and use it when needed.

Chance- The teacher asks the student a question from the homework and if they get it right, they get a small piece of candy, Bible Bucks or whatever the teacher thinks is appropriate. If the player answers incorrectly, they must go back to where they were.

Prayer- Any player landing on this place must recite a prayer. It can be a prayer of their choice or whatever the teacher chooses (specify before playing the game). If the player says the prayer correctly, they stay where they are. If they are not correct, they go back to where they were.

THE PLAY

Place your marker on the corner marked "GO", then throw the dice and move your marker (in the direction of the arrow) the number of spaces indicated by the dice. After you have completed your play, the turn passes to the next student that has turned in their homework. The markers remain on the spaces occupied and proceed from that point on the player's next turn. Two or more players may rest on the same space at the same time. Depending on the space your marker reaches, you may be obliged to draw a Community Chest Card, Go To Time Out, say a prayer or answer a question, etc.

If you throw doubles, you move your marker as usual, the sum of the two dice, and are subject to any privileges or penalties pertaining to the space on which you land. Retaining the dice, throw again and move your marker as before. If you throw doubles three times in succession, move your marker immediately to the space with a Time Out chair.

GO

Each time a player's marker lands on or passes over “GO”, whether by throwing the dice or drawing a card, the student may receive a little prize, such as picking a piece of sugarless gum or little trinket out of the pencil box of goodies, Bible Bucks or whatever the teacher thinks is an appropriate prize. However, if a player passing “GO” on the throw of the dice lands beyond it on Community Chest and draws the "Advance to GO" card, they collect a prize for passing “GO” the first time, and another prize for advancing to it the second time by the instructions on the card.

TIME OUT

You go to Time Out (Time Out chair) when...
(1) Your marker lands on the space marked "Go To Time Out"
(2) You draw a card marked "Go To Time Out" or
(3) You throw doubles three times in succession.
When you are sent to Time Out you cannot collect a prize in that move since, regardless of where your marker is on the board, you must move directly into Time Out. Your turn ends when you are sent to Time Out. If you are not sent to Time Out but in the ordinary course of play land on that space, you are "Just Visiting", you incur no penalty, and you move ahead in the usual manner on your next turn.

A player gets out of Time Out by...
(1) Throwing doubles on any of your next three turns, if you succeed in doing this you immediately move forward the number of spaces shown by your doubles throw. Even though you had thrown doubles, you do not take another turn.
(2) Using the "Get Out of Time Out Free Card".

CHURCH

Any player landing on this place does not receive any reward of any kind. This is just a "free" resting-place where the player spends time in meditation and prayer. If you receive an “Advance To Church” card, you immediately advance to CHURCH. If you happen to pass “GO”, you many receive a prize.

Have you ever experienced a Passover Seder? For many, Seder meals are not a common part of their typical Holy Week traditions. To help children understand what was eaten during this meal, here is a game that reviews the traditional food of the Seder meal.

Musical Chairs

Introduce game: Who ate with Jesus at the Last Supper? His disciples. Let’s see if there are enough chairs for everyone to sit. (Play Musical Chairs)

Line up alternate facing chairs, one less than the number of children playing. (Example: If there are 10 players, place 9 chairs). The players move round the chairs while the music is on. When the music stops they have to sit down on a free chair. The player without a chair is out and let that player be the one to stop the music the next time. Remove one chair each time the music is played. Repeat until you have only 2 players and 1 chair. The one to sit down first on the last chair is the winner.

This game is free, however it can only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit. Reproduction or retransmission of any materials, in whole or in part, in any manner, is not permitted. Last Supper File Folder Game- Play individually or in teams and work your way around the game board answering questions about the Last Supper. If you are correct you roll a die and move your marker in your row in any direction you want. If you land on a colored space, you can move one row toward the center with “Last Supper”. Play continues until a team or player reaches “Last Supper”.
